The arm both swings and extends. It pivots at the wall plate and again at the elbow, and it telescopes, so the shade can be pulled out over a bed, a desk or a dining table and pushed back flat against the wall when it is not needed. That is a different thing from a fixed sconce: you are not choosing a position once at installation, you are moving it whenever the room changes.

Three arm lengths, and the range matters more than the nominal size. The short arm reaches 14 to 22 inches from the wall, the medium 22 to 37 inches, and the long 30 to 51 inches. Measure from the wall plate to where you actually want the light before choosing - a bed with deep nightstands usually needs the medium, and a dining table set against a wall needs the long.

Three shade shapes are made. The cone is 10 inches across with straight sloping sides and throws a narrow, defined pool - the reading shade. The dome is also 10 inches across but curved and deeper, so the light is softer and spreads wider. The disc is 12 inches across and very shallow, which washes light outwards rather than straight down. All three are matt black iron with a warm painted interior, on a 4.7 inch round wall plate, with a 16 inch cord drop below the arm. Choose warm, neutral or cool white when ordering. It hardwires into a wall box, so there is no cord down the wall and no switch on the fitting.
