A narrow aluminium tube with an LED in the end of it, and the narrowness is the point. Hung beside a bed it frees the nightstand completely - no base, no cord across the table, nothing to knock over when you reach for a glass of water. The light comes out of the open bottom as a defined circle on the surface below rather than spilling across the room, so one person can read while the other sleeps.

It works the same way over a kitchen island or a dining table, where several in a row read as a line rather than as a set of separate fixtures. Two diameters are available, roughly one and two inches. The slim one disappears against a wall; the wider one holds its own over a counter. Two cord lengths, 4 ft and 6.5 ft: the long one is for high ceilings and open-plan rooms, the short one covers most standard ceilings.

The LED is integrated at five watts and cannot be replaced separately, which is what keeps the tube this slim. Choose warm, neutral or cool white when ordering - warm suits a bedside or a dining table, cool suits a work surface. Rated 90-260V and runs on US household current. Installation is limited to fixing the ceiling plate and setting the cord length. Three-year warranty. Beside a bed, hang the bottom of the tube roughly level with your shoulder when sitting up; over a dining table, about 30 inches above the top.
