The shade is a metal ball with its lower front cut open, held on a short arm by a small knurled brass knob. Loosen the knob and the ball tilts, so you aim the light where you need it instead of living with wherever the fixture happens to point. That is the whole difference between this and most decorative wall lights.

The body is iron with a matt powder-coated finish in black, grey or off-white, and the inside of the shade is painted cream so the light comes out warm rather than glaring. The shade is about 6 inches across, small enough for a hallway or a stairwell and right for the space beside a bed. Two of them spaced roughly six feet apart light a corridor without an overhead fixture at all.

It mounts flat on a round plate and wires into an existing wall box, so there is no cord down the wall and no switch on the fixture - you control it from the room switch. The E26 socket takes any standard US bulb and none is included, so you set the colour temperature yourself; a warm 2700K bulb gives the softest result and suits bedrooms and hallways best. Rated 90-260V for US household current. This is an indoor fitting and will do fine on a covered balcony, but should not be exposed to rain or spray. Two-year warranty.
